What “ad tracking software” means in practice
The category is easier to understand if you split it into three layers.

Most comparison pages collapse all three into a single feature checklist. That creates bad procurement decisions.
If you run paid traffic through landers and offers, accurate attribution is necessary but not sufficient. Your tool also has to preserve the click ID, apply the right route, ingest the partner’s callback, distinguish a lead from an approved sale or deposit, and show the result in the breakdown your buyer actually uses.
If you sell SaaS through a long sales cycle, redirect routing may be almost irrelevant. You may care much more about connecting the first anonymous visit to a CRM opportunity, subscription revenue, expansion, and LTV.

1. The source of truth for conversions
Ask where the conversion originates.
- An ecommerce order can come directly from Shopify or WooCommerce.
- A SaaS outcome can come from Stripe or a CRM lifecycle stage.
- An affiliate conversion may arrive from an advertiser through an S2S postback hours after the click.
- A media-buying funnel can have several meaningful events: registration, deposit, redeposit, approve, buyout, rejected, or a vertical-specific status.
A dashboard is not trustworthy merely because it is real time. You need to know which system created the event, how it was matched to the click, what happens when the same transaction arrives twice, and whether a later status change replaces or supplements the first conversion.

2. Traffic routing versus passive observation
Some tools observe a journey. Others sit directly in the traffic path.
A routing tracker may keep the ad URL stable while changing the destination by geo, device, schedule, returning-visitor state, or weighted split. It may send traffic through a landing page, directly to an offer, or into a fallback when the primary route is unavailable.
That is a different responsibility from adding a script to a store and reporting which ad produced a sale.

4. Status and revenue semantics
The word “conversion” is often too vague to operate on.

The tracker can be correct while the business is still hard to run.
After attribution, a team may still need to answer:

The seven-step proof test before you migrate
Do not evaluate tracking software from screenshots. Create a small test campaign that exercises the failure cases your production setup actually has.
1. Define the event contract
Write the fields before touching the UI:

Add every source token and custom dimension the buyer uses. If a field does not survive the round trip, the migration is not equivalent.
2. Recreate one real route
Use one traffic source, one primary landing page, two offers with a weighted split, and one fallback. Verify geo/device rules and returning-visitor behavior if they matter. A static demo link does not prove routing parity.
3. Send one normal conversion
Click the ad or test link, capture the click ID, complete the downstream action, and send the same callback format the real partner uses. Confirm the conversion appears on the correct campaign, offer, status, payout, currency, and timestamp.
4. Send the same transaction twice
Networks retry callbacks. The second request must not quietly double revenue. Check the event row, aggregate report, export, and any signal sent back to the ad platform.
5. Send a later status change
Send registration, then deposit, then rejected or another real
transition from your vertical. Confirm whether the system stores separate
events, updates one record, or requires an explicit mapping. Any of those
models can work; an undocumented mixture cannot.
6. Correct cost and compare reports
Import or synchronize cost, then change it. Verify the correction at the dimension you optimize—campaign, ad set, ad, placement, creative, or source token. Compare totals across the source, tracker, and downstream report.
7. Test access and recovery
Log in as a buyer, team lead, and read-only stakeholder. Verify each role sees the right campaigns and no unrelated data. Export the configuration and data you would need to recover, and document the rollback if the migration fails.
The result should be a pass/fail table, not a feeling. Record the evidence in the third column during your trial and mark the last column only after checking it:

The hidden cost: everything that happens after attribution
Ad tracking software is often purchased to eliminate bad decisions. Yet many teams fix attribution and keep the same operational gap:

That workflow can fail even when every system is individually correct. A campaign name changes in one export. An ad account moves between buyers mid-week. Run two trials if the responsibilities are genuinely different. For example, an ecommerce attribution product and a traffic-routing tracker may work well together. Forcing one to impersonate the other creates more risk than using two tools with a clean contract between them.
